The Electricity Act and Regulations are enforced by the Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore that creates and amends acts and laws related to the electricity, gas, and district cooling industries. The Electricity Act lays down all the rules and regulations related to the electricity industry to ensure safety and economic regulation of all related matters. The EMA also lays down guidelines on how to engage licensed electrical workers (LEWs) in Singapore.
According to EMA guidelines, consumers should engage licensed electrical workers for any kind of electrical work they require including wiring, rewiring, repair or modification of wiring, replacing or upgrading electrical circuits, switches, power outlets, and lighting points. It is prudent that LEWs be engaged for all these tasks as they have the required knowledge and expertise to carry out these jobs safely and adequately.
LEWs in Singapore belong to different classes depending on the scale of load they are allowed to handle. If you want electrical work to be done in an HDB, you can engage an electrician. A licensed electrician can carry out electrical works with an approved load not exceeding 45kVA and a voltage level of 1,000V and below.
However, if the scope of the electrical work is vast, for example, in a restaurant or a commercial building, it will require the services of an electrical technician. A licensed electrical technician is permitted for an approved load not exceeding 150kVA in design and 500kVA in operations. The approved voltage level for an electrical technician is 1,000V and below.
For even larger projects, an electrical engineer must be engaged for the work. For a licensed electrical engineer, there is no limit on the approved load whereas the voltage limit depends on the license conditions.
While engaging an LEW for any kind of electrical work, one should look for a valid license card that specifies his name, identity card number, license number, and has his photograph. The type of license whether it is for an electrician, electrical technician, or an electrical engineer is also specified at the top of the license card.
